The Pink Lake of Torrevieja, a spectacular scene
In Torrevieja there is a place that looks like the spectacular picture on a postcard, it is the Pink Lake.
This natural and unique phenomenon is famous throughout Spain for its attractive pink colour. This peculiar colour is a consequence of the high concentration of salt, similar to that of the Dead Sea. It is a beautiful place to get your Instagram worthy photographs. But bear in mind that it is prohibited to swim in the lake.
This unique phenomenon is located In the Vega Baja del Seguro. Many people come to visit the beauty of the lake because of its pink colour in the water, which is no surprise because the views are worth seeing first-hand. There is bacteria in the water that changes the colour of the lake. It releases a pinkish pigment in waters that have a high concentration of salt.
Another interesting fact, apart from its unique colour, is that it is the most productive lake in all of Spain, in terms of salt. Around 80,000 tons of salt are extracted from it every year. Believe us when we say that that is a lot!
However, visitors that come down to the lake should be aware that swimming is currently prohibited, despite this fact many people do it anyway and share it on social media.
This restriction has been put in place to guarantee and maintain the quality of the ecosystems. It is also there for safety reasons as there are machines working on salt extraction within the same lake and an unwanted accident for anyone trying out the waters is just around the corner.
Despite the fact that swimming is prohibited, it is highly recommended to visit the lake. Being able to enjoy this natural landscape without having to go to another continent is a luxury that must be taken advantage of. Should you go, at the ‘Centro de Interpretación del Parque Natural’ (Interpretation Center of the Natural Park) you can ask for information for hiking or cycling routes.
