The bonfires of Alicante

Every June, the city of Alicante is dressed in their finery as they make their way to the Bonfires festival. This festival is rich in culture and has been happening for 75 years. This festivity is famous for everything it encompasses; dinners, fireworks, parties and of course the famous Bonfires.

In the middle of June, specifically from the 20th to the 24th of June, the city of Alicante changed their routine to warm up for the Bonfires festival; a party that dates to the year 1928. However, it is common that one month before the festivity there are parties with the famous barracks in each district every weekend. Residents go out for dinner and enjoy their evening.

One of the main attractions of the Bonfires festival is to enjoy the firework show that takes place every Saturday and Sunday at 2pm during the month of June. From the 20th of June, the firework shows take place every day until the end date of the Bonfire festival. Many people are amazed by the event, because of the sound of fireworks, the smell of gunpowder and the great atmosphere.

Although the firework show is undoubtedly one of the main attractions, we can’t leave out the Bonfires itself. Throughout the entire city of Alicante, the famous bonfires are planted several days before, something similar to Las Fallas. Each bonfire tends to have its own fire district which has been designed with a particular theme. The themes can relate to politics, some important event of the year or even about something famous. However, keep in mind that the bonfires are burned before June 24th, the famous Cremá, so you should visit Alicante before they end up in ashes.

Finally, it only remains to say that the night of San Juan, the magical night of the year, on the beach of Postiguet, a crowd of people gather to make a bonfire on the beach and have dinner around it.

The fireworks show that takes place in the castle of Santa Barbara, which begins with the launch of the famous artificial ‘palm tree’, is what ends the festivities.
