The best cava in Spain is made in Valencia

Cava is the best known Spanish wine and one of the most preferred drinks for celebrations. On February the 14th, the winners of the Premio Verema were announced. The winery Requenense Hispano Suizas came in first with their Tantum Ergo Rosé

Cava is a Spanish natural sparkling wine, accidentally invented but loved on purpose by national and international experts. This drink has become a symbol in Spanish celebrations because it is suitable for every occasion, whether it’s a party at night or a family gathering. Not all Spanish sparkling wines are cava. They are only called cava if they are accepted by the “Denominación de Origen Cava” which includes 159 municipalities in ten provinces. This kind of wine is made in Álava, Badajoz, Girona, La Rioja, Lleida, Navarra, Tarragona, Valencia and Zaragoza.

Its bubbles are a product of a particular process, this champaign method has given it a special place on the Spanish table. Although the product is often identified with parties, it is also a good drink for a dinner. For a wine to be considered cava, it must meet a minimum age of nine months, at fifteen months it is in a reservoir and more than thirty months in a large reservoir.

The tantum Ergo Rosé, produced exclusively with Requena pinot noir and fermented in large oak barrels and has a minimum aging time of 18 months. They succeeded in captivating a community of followers, who chose it as the best Spanish cava. That is great news for the wine sector of the Valencian Community. They also achieved third place by recognition of the Denominación de Origen Valencia among the Consejos Reguladores (Regulatory Councils), as well as the third place for the young “Clos de Lom” in the category of Vino Revelación (Revelation Wine) with its Garnacha 2018.

The Premios Verema 2019 ceremony happened on Thursday 27th of February in the Apolo del Columnario Malvarrosa del Hotel Balneario Las Arenas, where the Verema Valencia Experience took place.
