Tabarca Island

On the Alicante coast there are several small islands such as Portixol, Penyes d’Arabí or the Descubridor, but there is one that stands out above the others for being inhabited and being the most visited throughout the year, the Tabarca island. This small island is 22 kilometres from the city of Alicante and has a population of 57 inhabitants. It is 1800 meters in length from west to east.
Tabarca island is the only island in all of Alicante that is currently inhabited, it is also the largest island in the entire Valencian Community. You can see archaeological ruins from the Roman times with historical sights such as the necropolis or amphorae. It contains so much history that even Strabo himself documented the island saying it was dangerous due to the abundance of pitfalls.
Since it is a small island it is possible to explore it all in one full day, that is why the single-day boat trips from Alicante and Santa Pola are so popular. The most interesting things to check out on the island are:
San José tower. It is a tower that was built in the 19th century and was used as a prison.
The Lighthouse. You can easily access the lighthouse on the island. It was built in the mid-nineteenth century. From here you can see the entire island and the cemetery.
The beaches and Galera Island. Tabarca has several beaches of crystalline waters and gravel type sand that is ideal for snorkelling. In the southern part of the island you can see the Isla de la Galera.
Levante door. This is the entrance door to the island, through this door you can access all the different restaurants, shops and see the houses on the island.
Visiting the Tabarca island, is without a doubt a perfect way to spend a day you have nothing to do, get lost in its streets and discover all the hidden nooks and corners, as well as the sea, the beaches, the lighthouse and port.
