Sant Josep’s caves, one of the most impressive grottos in Spain

In the Castellón area you will find the largest underground river in Europe, specifically located in the Sierra de Espadán Natural Park in La Vall d’Uixo. This river is part of Sant Josep’s natural caves, which are one of the most impressive caves in the entire Valencian Community. It has been declared a Property of Cultural Interest.

The underground river is impressively long, we are talking about more than three kilometers, of which the beginning or the end of the grotto is not exactly known yet. Throughout the entire stretch of the river, there is only about 800 meters that can be navigated. You can discover one part by boat and the other 255m by foot. The rest of the area is inaccessible, but it still leaves plenty of this Valencian grotto to discover.

The tour of the river and the area that is done on foot, is a visual spectacle where you can appreciate the stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over the years due to the natural development of the land. Some are remarkable in size.

The guided visit to the grotto lasts approximately 45 minutes in which you will go by boat and on foot, depending on the section of the grotto that you are going to discover. As expected, it is advisable to wear long sleeves to visit the grotto. Inside is a constant temperature of about 20 degrees throughout the year, so it can get pretty cold if you do not wear appropriate clothing.

Another more daring option is to visit the river by kayak. In this case the experience lasts about an hour and a half, during which the 800 navigable meters of the river will be covered and the dry areas will be accessed.
