Must-sees in Valencia

Ancient and modern monuments alike, narrow alleys, plenty of markets and a multicultural atmosphere: Valencia is a city with ample places to visit that will render you speechless.

Valencia is a city with a rich history, the proof that remains nowadays are the monuments. From impressive squares to characteristic cathedrals that date back to the Middle Ages, and even buildings that look like it came straight out of a science fiction movie: Valencia has it all.

In this article we are going to tell you about places that are a must-see when you are in Valencia.

On the outskirts of Valencia lies Albufera, we start our tour here. This natural park is located at 10 km from the city and can be reached by taking bus line 25. It is the perfect place to disconnect from the city for a while, as it is surrounded by nature. There are quite a few activities to do here, an example is taking a boat trip through the famous rice fields and spotting all the flora and fauna. Another reason for your visit is the amazing cuisine. This is where they invented the popular Valencian paella.

Upon returning to the city center you will cross the, what used to be, Turia river. It is then that you will probably spot the majestic buildings inside the old riverbed. We’re talking about the City of Arts and Sciences, which is a complex of buildings, dedicated to scientific and cultural spreading. Among them are the Hemisfèric: a 3D cinema, the Umbracle: a garden, the Museu de les ciències: a museum dedicated to science, technology and the environment, and last but not least Oceanogràfic: the largest aquarium in Europe. In all these venues are different activities and exhibitions happening throughout the year. You’ll find joy not only inside these buildings, but also outside as their architecture and design are a sight for sore eyes.

Next stop: Torres de Serrano and Torres de Quart. Just after crossing the river, you will find these remains of the old medieval wall which marks the entrance of the Carmen neighbourhood. It is definitely a labyrinth of narrow streets and it is located between the old Muslim and Christian walls. Markets with local products, small squares full of pubs and an unbeatable cultural environment. The best thing to do here is to discover all the secrets that El Carmen holds by getting lost in its narrow alleys and blend in with the locals.

Very close to the Carmen neighbourhood, you won’t even know you have crossed neighbourhoods, is La Lonja de la Seda. It is one of the most remarkable buildings in Valencia and it wad declard a World Heritage by UNESCO. We highly recommend going there, especially as the entry fee is only €1 for students.

In front of the fish market you can find the Central Market. This market is the most important market in the city and is considered a masterpiece of Valencian modernism. Whether it earned the title because of the different food stands, its atmosphere, the impressive interior and structure or because of its facade, it is another one on the list of places to see in Valencia.

We would like to finish the tour by heading towards the heart of the city, the Plaza de la Virgen. This 13th century square is located in the historic center. In the square you will find the Cathedral, which was built on top of an ancient Roman temple, which was once rebuilt into a mosque. This Gothic-style monument guards different works of art, like the Goya’s canvases and it is said to hold the Holy Chalice inside. From the Miguelete, the tower that is located next to the cathedral, you will have the perfect opportunity to shoot a panoramic picture. The spectacular view will show you the entire city center, but you have to climb 207 steps first! In the square there aren’t just monuments, there are also many terraces where you can come together with friends for some delicious churros or buñuelos (pumpkin fritters), which you can wash down with a drink, while admiring the history this delightful city offers.

These are some of the most famous monuments in Valencia, but bear in mind that there are many others worth visiting. So go out and walk around the city, and take in all that this city has to offer.
