Magical route through Bocairent and Les Covetes Dels Moros

Within the Valencian Community there is a place called Bocairent that offers charm and history like no other. Here they have a famous path that lets you discover the most remarkable corners of the Medieval town. Bocairent is also known for the Covetes del Moros, a group of artificial caves that were declared as a National Monument in 1932.

Bocairent is a town where you can take various routes, but the most special one is the Magic Route. This characteristically named route starts at the town hall square, a place where you can appreciate the architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries, you will be taken through the houses that still stand in that same square.

The Magic Route runs through the old town, it is a narrow winding road, built with rocks and stones, giving it that medieval touch that any old town should have. Along this path you can see the architectural evolution that the houses, streets, caves, bridges and old hermitages in Bocairent have been through.

This next place is a must see: “Les Covetes del Moros”. Here artificial caves were excavated from the rock of the mountain. What is truly impressive about them is that there are many of them on the same mountain. On the same wall there are around 50 small caves connected which makes for a view similar to small windows to anyone looking at it from the outside.

The origin of these caves is not entirely clear, but it is speculated that they were built to give a grave to the inhabitants of the town. There are also theories that they were made for the purpose of ending up being granaries, pantries or even shelters during the war. Although the exact date of its construction is uncertain, it is known that they date back to the Hispano-Muslim, Hispano-Arab era.
