Discover Peñíscola, city of templars, potatoes and fish

Peñíscola

Peñíscola is one of those cities that offers a great time for anyone going there. Within the city you can enjoy truly beautiful sandy beaches, coves and cliffs, because the Costa del Azahar leaves no one unimpressed. Another beauty of this city is its castle. It stands imposingly on the top of the Peñíscola mountain, crowning the city as would be expected of a medieval castle, which hides the history of templars behind its walls.

The Peñíscola castle, built on an ancient foundation of a Muslim fortress, was the work of the Orden del Temple (Templar Order). This castle, where history is mainly related to the templars, was home to Pope Benedicto XIII, popularly known as Papa Luna. You can still visit the dungeons, the Conclave Hall, the church and the Gothic Hall

Within the city, there is a rather peculiar place called Bufador, which is one of the oddities that this medieval city hides. The Bufador is a hole between rocks that has formed over time. The interesting thing about it, is that above those rocks there are houses which can perfectly hear the waves that pass through the hole, which makes for a spectacle on stormy days.

Meereen can be remembered as the city of the Bay of slaves where Daenerys frees everyone and begins her reign as the mythical Breaker of Chains, to later end up fighting for the Iron Throne.

Finally it is worth mentioning that Peñíscola has an excellent cuisine, it is essential to try its rice dishes, fresh fish and seafood, the date palm and caixetes
