Beach clean-up at La Malvarrosa

On February 15th you have a date scheduled with the planet. The “Surfrider Foundation Europe” and “Recoge tu plástico” (Collect your plastic) have organised a clean-up on the Malvarrosa beach, in order to maintain a clean planet.
Tons of waste washes up on the beach and piles up year after year, and it is the lack of social awareness, parties thrown on the beach and the illegal dumping of garbage that have made the beaches become landfills.
Dirt on the beaches is still a continuing issue. When we sunbathe, we are accompanied by an ice cream bag, a bandaid, a tissue or maybe even a floating diaper. And you don’t need to dip your hands in the sand to find cigarette butts, plastic cups and food wrappers.
The pollution of beaches and oceans is one of the most worrying problems of environment protection and conservation organisations, due to its effects on animal and human life. The current environmental conditions are responsible for around 25% of global deaths and diseases, according to a report by the United Nations.
The waste on the beaches affects thousands of animals that die every day from entanglement, suffocation, strangulation or swallowing plastic material or garbage that we threw into the sea. Microplastics can be ingested by crustaceans and fish, even by plankton, causing problems for animal fauna due to chemical contaminants being present in the intestines. In addition to that, they can pass this on through the food chain until the food reaches our plates.
To reduce the impact on the environment, the Surfrider Foundation Europe organises a yearly beach clean-up throughout Europe. It is called the “Ocean Initiatives”, and during this event they try to address the contamination of marine litter through education, science and political action. Including human beings as a part of the solution.
The Valencian group “Recoge tu plástico” (Collect your plastic) organises clean-ups on beaches and other natural areas. Together with ''Ocean Initiatives'' they have scheduled a collection of plastic on the Malvarrosa beach on Saturday 15 February 2020.
The clean-up will begin at 4:00 p.m. and will end at 05:30 p.m. including the count of the waste found. If you want to participate all you have to do is bring gloves, paper and a pen! This activity is totally free, but it’s important to know that by registering yourself you accept that the organiser is not responsible for the damages that may be suffered during the clean-up, since this activity is non-profit and your own responsibility.
If you want to sign up, you just have to register yourself by clicking on the link and entering your information: https://www.initiativesoceanes.org/es/collecte/14746 . Information about the clean-up is on the website but you can also follow them on Instagram: @recogetuplastico
If you want to help out and make earth a bit cleaner, join this event and be part of the change. This action is not just about a day, as citizens we must be aware of our impact on the environment and take responsibility for our actions. If you drop something, pick it up.
